Yearly expenses without panic: sinking funds, month by month
Costs that come once a year, such as insurance, the holidays or a vacation, feel unexpected but are predictable. List them, divide each by 12 and set the amount aside monthly in separate funds. When the bill arrives, the money is already there and the month stays balanced.

What are sinking funds?
A sinking fund is an amount you set aside every month for a large but predictable expense that comes later.
The difference from an emergency fund: the emergency fund covers what you cannot foresee (an illness, losing a job). Sinking funds cover what you know is coming.
Which yearly expenses do you have?
Go through last year’s statement and look for large amounts that appear once or a few times a year.
- Insurance: car, home.
- Taxes, vehicle inspection.
- Annual subscriptions.
- Holidays and gifts.
- Vacation.
- School and classes.
- Home repairs.
What does an example look like?
Divide each yearly amount by 12. The figures are illustrative.
| Expense | Per year | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Car insurance | 2,400 lei | 200 lei |
| Inspection and taxes | 600 lei | 50 lei |
| Annual subscriptions | 1,200 lei | 100 lei |
| Holidays and gifts | 6,000 lei | 500 lei |
| Vacation | 12,000 lei | 1,000 lei |
| School | 4,000 lei | 333 lei |
| Home repairs | 5,000 lei | 417 lei |
| Total | 31,200 lei | 2,600 lei |
Where do you keep the money?
Put the amounts in a savings account separate from your current one so they do not get lost in daily spending. You can keep a single account and track in the app how much is allocated to each goal.
An automatic transfer on payday removes the risk of forgetting. For goals coming soon, choose somewhere the money is easy to withdraw.
What if 2,600 lei a month is too much?
Start with the nearest or mandatory goals: insurance, taxes, school. Add the vacation and repairs one at a time as the budget allows.
If an amount is too big, shrink the goal: a cheaper or shorter vacation, gifts with a per-person limit.
How do you follow the funds?
In Family Calculator you can log the payment for each expense under its category and compare, at year end, what it really cost against the amount you set aside. If you set aside too little, adjust next year. If a difference is left, move it to savings.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account for every fund?
Not necessarily. You can have one savings account and track separately how much is allocated to each goal.
When do I start if the expense is three months away?
Divide the amount by the months left, not by 12. For the rest of the year, move to the normal rate.
What do I do with money left in a fund?
Move it to another goal or to savings. It is not “found” money: it is the result of planning.
