A vacation budget without debt: how to plan it and save ahead
A vacation budget has five parts: transport, accommodation, food, activities and a 10% reserve. Add them up, divide the total by the months left before you leave and set that amount aside every month. You then travel with the money already saved, not with a loan to repay afterwards.

Which costs belong in a vacation budget?
Many people count only tickets and accommodation. The rest, especially eating out and activities, often adds up to a third of the total.
- Transport: tickets or fuel and road tolls, plus local transport at the destination.
- Accommodation: per night, with local taxes included.
- Food: per day, for every family member.
- Activities: entrance fees, excursions, rentals.
- Travel insurance and documents, if needed.
- Reserve: about 10% for what you did not foresee.
What does an example for a family of four look like?
The example below is illustrative: one week, seven nights. Replace the amounts with real ones for your destination.
| Category | Calculation | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | tickets for four people | 6,000 lei |
| Accommodation | 7 nights × 1,000 lei | 7,000 lei |
| Food | 7 days × 500 lei | 3,500 lei |
| Activities | tickets and excursions | 1,500 lei |
| Insurance | four people | 600 lei |
| 10% reserve | 10% of 18,600 lei | 1,860 lei |
| Total | 20,460 lei |
How much do you set aside each month?
Divide the total by the number of months before you leave. For 20,460 lei and ten months, that is 2,046 lei a month. If the figure feels too high, you have three levers: more months, a cheaper destination or time of year, or a shorter stay.
Keep the money separate from everyday spending so it does not get lost in the current month. An automatic transfer on payday helps.
How do you cut the cost without spoiling the trip?
- Travel outside peak season; accommodation and tickets are often much cheaper.
- Book transport and lodging early, but with free cancellation.
- Choose a place with a kitchen and cook at least breakfast.
- Decide on two or three must-do activities in advance and leave the rest open.
- Compare exchange rates and fees before you change money or pay by card.
How do you track spending while travelling?
Record each expense the day it happens, in the local currency. A simple daily budget keeps you on track: divide the food and activities money by the number of days and check each evening how much you used.
In Family Calculator you can log an expense with a sentence, a voice message or a photo of the receipt, and the app converts it at the MAIB rate. You see straight away whether you are within budget.
What if you go over budget?
Do not cover the gap with a consumer loan. Cut the flexible items first: activities and restaurant meals. If you still overspend, write down the amount and include it in next month’s saving plan so it does not become a forgotten debt.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I start saving?
The earlier the better, because the monthly amount shrinks. For a family vacation, six to twelve months is a comfortable window.
Is the 10% reserve worth it?
Yes. Almost every trip has something unexpected: a taxi, medicine, a lost ticket. If you do not use it, it stays in your savings.
How do we split costs when several families travel together?
Agree in advance who pays for what and record everything in one place. At the end, split the difference rather than every single purchase.
